Where the herds will be in July 2027

A sector-by-sector read on the northern Serengeti, and which camps are still holding space for the crossings.

July is when the front of the migration reaches the Mara River, and the sector you book decides whether you see a crossing far more than the exact week you travel.

Where the herds tend to be

By early July, the leading columns are usually pushing north through Kogatende, in the northern Serengeti, with the bulk of the herd still spread across the central plains behind them. By late July and into August, the crossings concentrate at the known points along the Mara River itself.

Why the sector matters more than the date

A camp within thirty minutes of the river gives you a realistic chance of reaching a crossing while it's happening; a camp two hours away, in the same week, in the same broad area, often means arriving after the animals have already crossed and moved on. This is the single most common misunderstanding among first-time migration travellers.

What we are watching for 2027

  • Rainfall in the southern Serengeti through the preceding wet season, which affects how early the herds move north
  • Which camps in Kogatende and the Mara Triangle still hold July availability
  • Whether the crossing points cluster near Kogatende or further west toward the Mara Triangle this year
Timing is a matter of probability, not certainty. A camp in the right sector during the right fortnight puts you in the middle of it; a lodge two hours away in the same week does not.

If July 2027 is your target, the practical advice is to book the sector now and let us adjust the exact camp closer to the date as the season's pattern becomes clearer — most of the good camps at the river hold only a handful of tents and sell out roughly a year ahead.
