Mt. Kilimanjaro

Six routes exist up the mountain; we run three, chosen for reliability, scenery and a fair deal for the crew who carry the loads.

Overview

What to expect

Kilimanjaro is a walk, not a technical climb — no ropes, no ice axes on the standard routes — which is exactly why it is underestimated. Altitude is the actual obstacle: Uhuru Peak sits at 5,895 metres, and most failed attempts end from altitude sickness rather than fatigue.

The route you choose changes your odds more than your fitness does. Longer routes acclimatise better and summit more reliably; shorter ones are cheaper and harder on the body.

Routes

Which route, and why

Lemosho

Longest, highest success, quietest start

Eight days, approaching from the west across the mountain's least-crowded side. The extra two days over Marangu are what push summit success above ninety percent. We run this route.

Honest advice

What we tell everyone

01

Altitude decides more than fitness

Marathon runners fail on summit night and unfit hikers succeed — the difference is nearly always the acclimatisation schedule, not the training.

02

Buy the extra days if you can

Two more days on the mountain is the cheapest insurance against turning back at Stella Point.

03

Porters are the trip's real infrastructure

A KPAP-registered crew, weighed and insured, is what actually gets you up safely — check any operator quoting a noticeably lower price on this point first.

04

Pack for four seasons in one day

Rainforest heat at the gate, snow at the summit. Layering matters more than any single expensive item.

05

The summit is optional; the mountain is not

Guides turn climbers back for medical reasons more often than guests expect. A good operator would rather you descend safely than summit at risk.
