Climbing Kilimanjaro in 2027: routes, cost and what actually matters
Lemosho versus Machame versus Marangu, summit rates by route length, and the acclimatisation profile we insist on.
Josephat Kimaro · February 2026

We run three routes up Kilimanjaro: Lemosho, Machame and Marangu. The route you pick changes your odds of summiting more than your fitness does, because it decides how many nights you spend acclimatising before the push.
The three routes, compared
- Lemosho — 8 days, the longest of the three, roughly 90% summit success, quietest approach from the west
- Machame — 7 days, the most popular route, roughly 85% summit success, camping throughout
- Marangu — 6 days, the only hut-based route, roughly 65% summit success, the shortest and cheapest
Why the extra days matter
Altitude sickness, not fatigue, is what turns climbers back. The body needs time above 3,000 metres to produce more red blood cells, and there is no shortcut to that — only more nights at altitude. Two extra days on Lemosho over Marangu is the single biggest lever a climber has over their own success rate.
What the acclimatisation profile actually looks like
Every route we run includes at least one "climb high, sleep low" day — walking to a higher altitude for the views and the acclimatisation benefit, then descending to sleep at a lower camp. It adds a day to the schedule and meaningfully changes how climbers feel on summit night.
The crew
Every porter on our climbs is KPAP-registered: weighed at the gate to enforce the 20kg carrying limit, insured, and paid a fixed daily wage regardless of which route or how the tips land. An operator quoting well below ours on the same route is very likely cutting this, not their margin.
A guide who has climbed the mountain ninety-one times will still tell you: the summit is optional, the mountain is not. We turn climbers back for medical reasons more often than most people expect.
If you are choosing for 2027, book Lemosho if your schedule and budget allow it, Machame if you want the most-climbed route with strong scenery, and Marangu only if you specifically want hut accommodation and are confident in your own acclimatisation.
